Garbarek in PolandJan Garbarek, the prominent Norwegian saxophonist and composer, is billed in Częstochowa, southern Poland tonight.
Garbarek is one of the featured artists at the ‘Gaude Mater’ International Festival of Sacred Music. His tour of Poland also includes Lublin (5 May), Warsaw (6 May, St John’s Cathedral) and Wrocław (7 May).
The programme of the concerts, during which Garbarek appears with the British vocal quartet the Hilliard Ensemble, comprises ancient Greek and medieval songs featured on the CDs Officium and Mnemosyne.
Born in 1947 in Mysen, Norway, Garbarek gained worldwide recognition in the 1970s as a member of the Keith Jarrett Quartet. His father was a Polish POW who settled in Norway after the war, but despite his Polish roots, he has only a few words of Polish. He has made recordings with Poland’s most prominent jazz artist and trumpeter Tomasz Stanko.
